Safe City Project was launched in 2018 with a tenure of 3 years (i.e., till 2021) and is extended till 2024. Safe City Project is a pilot initiative conceptualized under Nirbhaya Fund Projects with an objective to strengthen the critical gaps for increasing the efficiency of metro cities in providing safe and secure environment for women. The projects involve identification of hotspots for crime against women and deployment of various components including infrastructure, technology adoption, and capacity building in community through awareness programmes which will enable safety for women.

The Safe City Project Framework and Guidelines as devised by MHA, states the goal in ensuring security of women in metro/large cities by strengthening the following:

  • Civil amenities for women in public places
  • Easy access for women to law enforcement agencies, counsellors, and legal assistance
  • Enhanced use of IT in surveillance in hotspots, tracking of offenders and response to women in cases of sexual assault

Community sensitization on Gender issues, especially on sexual assault matters relating to awareness on safety measures, reporting of assault and community support to victims.
