Role & Function

Role & Function

All matters within the Union Government’s jurisdiction under Part VIII of the Constitution and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, as applicable to the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, except those specifically assigned to other Ministries or Departments. This encompasses all matters pertaining to the two Union Territories, including security-related issues, relief and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Migrants, and the delegation of powers to the Administrator/Lieutenant Governor under Article 239 of the Constitution of India. Formulation of regulations under Article 240 of the Constitution for the peace, progress, and good governance of the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Department is also responsible for review of implementation of major projects of economic importance by various Central Ministries as well as Departments of UTs of J&K and Ladakh.

  • Formation: With the passing of Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019, Union Territory of Jammu Kashmir came on existence on 31.10.2019.All the central acts have been made applicable to The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • Legislature- It is a UT with Legislature.

  • Districts– There are 20 districts in J&K spread over an area of 42,241 sq .kms.

  • Languages of the UT of J&K - Government has notified Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu, Hindi and English languages as the official languages to be used for all or any of the official purposes of the Union Territory.
  • For administrative purposes, the State is divided into two Divisions, namely Jammu and Kashmir. The divisions are further sub-divided into 22 districts viz. Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar in Jammu Division and Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kupwara, Shopian, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Baramulla, Budgam, Kulgam, Leh, Kargil in Kashmir Division.

  • Legislature: It is a Union Territory without Legislature.

  • Districts: It comprises of 2 districts i.e. Leh and Kargil.
